Se muda a New York, y toca regularmente con Wallace Roney, Antoine Roney, Terri Lyne Carrington, Greg Osby, y Cindy Blackman. Ha también tocado y grabado con Esperanza Spalding, Gary Thomas, Wayne Krantz, Rasheed Ali, Stefon Harris, Horacio “El Negro” Hernández, Giovanni Hidalgo, George Garzone, Jane Bunnett y Jerry Bergonzi. Ortiz has recorded 3 very well received albums as a leader.
