Orientation
Since 2010, the Masters in Bioorganic Chemistry at the Universidad Veracruzana has been oriented towards fundamental and applied chemistry research.
Justification
The Masters in Bioorganic Chemistry lies between Chemistry and Biology; however, it mainly takes elements from Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry to solve biological problems and to develop chemical studies inspired in biological processes. Various topics are covered, from research on enzymology, chemistry of peptides and nucleic acids, biosensors, and molecular recognition to design and synthesis of drugs, among others. From an interdisciplinary point of view, the Masters in Bioorgánica Chemistry integrates tools from Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Natural Products, and Spectroscopy; this can be seen in the variety of articles that our research professors have published.
The Masters in Bioorganic Chemistry offers knowledge on Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, spectroscopic techniques, and a diversity of analytical methods that allow the proper identification of chemical compounds and the evaluation of molecular interactions. These are the main tools to understand the area of Bioorganic Chemistry.
The Masters in Bioorganic Chemistry also provides solid training, which is flexible enough to complete the appropriate studies to have an adequate knowledge on natural products, drug design, chemical interactions among molecular structures, as well as important aspects based on metabolic biochemistry.
This masters degree offers to the students essential tools, methodologies, and the appropriate terminology on Bioorganic Chemistry, which will allow them to take part on interdisciplinary research projects and to solve practical problems related to some aspects on Organic Chemistry and/or Biology; this expands the range of action of the graduate within the labor market.
Mission
The Masters in Bioorganic Chemistry mission is to generate knowledge and to academically train specialized graduates, who will be competitive within the Bioorganic Chemistry research area, and contribute to national, state, and regional development. These functions must be accomplished with high standards, such as quality, suitability, equity, ethical and social commitment, and within a continuous environment conservation, and a permanent generation and diffusion of the knowledge.
Vision
The Masters in Bioorganic Chemistry will take a stance of excellence within the connection with different society sectors, the high quality of graduates, and the generation, application, and diffusion of the knowledge related to Bioorganic Chemistry, thus being a national and international academic reference.
General Objective
The high-level academic training of the graduates of the Masters in Bioorganic Chemistry will be exceptionally competitive and able to plan, create, and develop research projects within different aspects of the Bioorganic Chemistry area, as well as resolve problems within the ambit of the public and private sectors.
Goals
a) At least 70% of students from every generation will graduate.
b) 70% of students from every generation will participate in scientific events, where 80% will be in national or international meetings related to organic chemistry, physical chemistry, chemistry of natural products, analytical chemistry, and other areas related to bioorgánica chemistry.
c) 20% of students from every generation will publish an article in an indexed research journal, where the advisors will be co-authors; this paper will contain results from the thesis.
d) 100% of students from every generation will carry out academic activities (national exchange or popular science).
e) 100% of students from every generation will carry out social retribution activities according to Secihti’s outlines.
